Text Box: My message this week gives an update on topics that the faculty and administration are addressing during this school year. Some of this focus came from comments made by parents in the school survey that went home last year. Two topics that we are working on are bullying and social skills.

Bullying at OLQH School is a problem that manifests itself sometimes in ways that are different from what we read about or hear about in schools around the nation. Nonetheless, the issues must be handled and a pro-active stance must be established. The school is doing or has done the following so far this year:
Mrs. Piraro is using the Get Real about Violence Program in Grades PreK - 4 particularly. She also sends home connection papers to the parents describing what was discussed in class. Some parents have made a point of telling her how they go over the paper as a family. That is an excellent way of connecting the family and the school and reinforcing the lessons at the same time. Parents of third and fourth grade students might ask their children from time to time about these lessons and handouts.
Faculty In-services are planned with Mr. Don Caldwell from CPSB. He will address the faculty and provide training that equips the teachers with knowledge and strategies that can be implemented immediately. These sessions will take place in February and March. The faculty will view a video on bullying in January as an intro to Mr. Caldwell’s workshops.

Social Skills is not a class on how to become a socialite. Rather, it is a timely topic that has entered school curriculums as a means of helping students to communicate their thoughts to adults and other students in a comfortable and appropriate manner. Long ago it was acceptable to just say that some children are shy. Then the not so kind term came along that some people are introverts. Now there are other dimensions of social development among the total population. Some children actually have a deficiency in knowing how to communicate. How to answer questions, how to carry on an effective conversation, etc. As a Catholic school, we build
community by strengthening our members to be effective and comfortable communicators and contributors in a variety of environments. Mr. Scott Reviere will conduct a teacher-inservice in January. He will share techniques for building good communication skills with all children.

Parent Training
There are several plans in-the-making for parent sessions during the second semester. Check future newsletters for details and upcoming events.

AFTER THE HUNT...REJOICE!  (AND WE DID!!!)

If you were fortunate to be in the vicinity of the FLC gym last Wednesday, you were truly in attendance of a culinary event not soon forgotten as our friend, Chef John Folse both inspired and entertained us with special  tips from his new book, “After the Hunt” just released in all it’s glory for the first time at OLQHS.  From the precious introductory skit performed by the culinary club (written and created by Pam Fontenot and Kelly Babineaux) to the authentic hunting antics and props provided by our very own Msrg. Gaddy., the event was a huge success.

The success of any event is always measured by the strength and talents of the fabulous corps of volunteers that only OLQHS seems to hold near and dear to our hearts.  I would like to thank the following persons who made this event the adventure and exciting event that it was!
